bringing design home: craft fair 101
It’s been one week since our first attempt at the Dust Bowl Arts Market in Norman, Oklahoma. It was supposed to be the event of the year, or at least the first half of the year, and for Meg and I, it was definitely the learning event of the year. Continue Reading
You may find it as a shock but we we’re a little surprised when asked to be featured in a mini blog series highlighting eco-friendly artists. I guess somewhere in our heads we had convinced ourselves that being “green” meant you had to live in a grass hut and eat organic granola all day. The whole situation made us think, what is green really? Is it something that has been defined for us by media and news, or something advertising just uses to sell more products? It really challenged us to look at what we love, and why we just might be a little more ‘green’ than we thought. Continue Reading
I start thinking about spring when my first seedlings break the surface, and I start getting really excited when my raspberries and grapes begin to put out their new runners, and it’s officially spring after our first good thunderstorm. Then for me it’s Katy bar the door I want to be outside!
This is the first post in a series that will include myself and a few other designers (this current trip included Blake Crosley, Scott Hill & Paul Wilkes from FoundryCo) as we travel to different senior design shows around OKC and the surrounding areas. In my opinion, these seniors are the people (creatives?) we need to pursue. We need them to stay in Oklahoma and help spur on new things (pioneer/spearhead new ventures?). They are the lifeblood to the future here. (They are integral to the future of the creative industry here). With that in mind, I have set out to meet these up-and-coming design professionals and check out the work they have done. Continue Reading

This spring we’re full of expectations. We have expectations of our items being sold in a store in downtown OKC, a possible feature in a national magazine (we’ll know in May), possibly doing some artsy fartsy craft shows and so much more. Something’s on the move; something is coming. Things are changing and we can feel it in our spirit just above the surface. It’s there, waiting to explode.
Ever feel like life is one big revolving door? It’s spinning so fast that you can’t tell where you want to get off, or how to get off. Sometimes I feel like the little kid—so worried that I’m going to get crushed that I just keep spinning ’round and ’round in the same door, never going anywhere. Design can often feel like this whether working from home (i.e., me) or in a corporate office; sometimes it feels like you’ve been spinning for a while and you begin to wonder, ‘Should I have stepped through the door back there?’ This was the very question I wrestled with when I decided to head home and start Green Couch Design with Meg. I’m back—it’s been a crazy few weeks for Meg and me. We volunteered to help design the Valentine’s banquet for a local church; what fun! Continue Reading
Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with Debbie Millman, one of the biggest names in branding and design. Here is my two cents on why she is so successful and a few questions that I got the chance to ask. Continue Reading
